Detailed information about performance of mixed tanks is crucial in many industrial applications. CFD analysis helps us to identify recirculation zones, quantify homogenization, and optimize design of the mixer. Moreover, the simulation can predict the behavior of free surface, which is important in applications involving mass transfer.
We found the interIsoFoam solver from ESI distribution of OpenFOAM to be a tool that is well suited for this particular task. The solver supports both standard frozen rotor MRF as well as the sliding mesh approach.
In the videos below, you can see a prototype mixed tank with baffles at two different operating conditions. You can clearly see more dynamic free surface movement and entrainment of air bubbles at higher rotor speeds.
